Member Spotlight: Marcus Diehl

Hey, hey, hey!  We're back with another Member Spotlight.  Let us preface this post by stating that Marcus got ambushed for his "headshot" at 5AM in the morning, and looks pretty darn chipper (heh - he - double entendre) anyway!  Thanks for being a great sport, a heck of an athlete, and all around fun guy.  Don't you just look at him and wonder where he stands on Oxford commas?  Well - read the article and decide for yourselves.  Also - dude is down for Chipotle.  We knew we liked him... 

 1.  Hey there!  Where are you from?

Being Army brat, I not really from anywhere. The best I can describe is that I was born in Germany,  spent my childhood in Turkey and went to High School and College in Virginia. The last 7 years I've spent in Pittsburgh.

2.  What do you do for a living?

I work downtown for PPG currently creating monitoring and automation solutions for servers.

3.  How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I started doing CrossFit 2 years ago in August of 2013. Coincidentally Jessica Quinn was in my introduction class, along with Dana Kennedy.  

4.  Tell us about your athletic history…

I don't have much of an athletic history. The most I have ever done was Recreation Soccer in high school. After that, I encouraged to do the occasional marathon by my Dad


5.  What brought you to CrossFit St. Clair?

I was training for my first full marathon and read how I should cross train instead of running all the time. I had just signed up for LA Fitness and received a free 1 hour Personal Training. During the session, the trainer took me through a bunch of machines at a rapid pace that I was out of breath. At the end of session, he stated that what I did was 'Crossfit'.  It was an intense workout so I got curious and googled CrossFit.  That's when I learned actual gyms dedicated to CrossFit and if I wanted to do it again, maybe I should go to a dedicated gym instead of LA Fitness. Through I found a near by affiliate that was also offering a GroupOn discount too. That is where I met Jim Crowell at Integrated Fitness. It was him who really helped me understand the mechanics behind all the movements. Needless to say, I was hooked.  Which was a good thing too because 1 month before the full marathon I got pneumonia and ended up not running it. Wait, the question was how did I find St Clair CrossFit ? Anyway, fast forward a year and Jim left to go Arizona to join OPEX and Integrated Fitness closed shortly after. After taking 2 months off I search for a new Box to join. That's where I came across StClair CrossFit and recognized a lot of faces. Since I felt already knew nearly half the people, I stayed to get to know the other half.

6.  What are you currently working on in the gym?  (Strength/PR/Endurance, anything!)

My current goal is in improving the weakness in my shoulders. I'm working on all 3; strength, mobility and technique.

7.  Favorite food?  

My favorite food is mostly just crunchy stuff.  There is French Fries, Kettle Corn and Potato Chips.  Then there is Chipotle.

8.  Favorite movie?

My favorite movies are based on movies I can just watch over and over with out getting tired of them.  The Matrix, Shawshank Redemption, The Incredibles, Rambo, Lilo & Stitch, Fight Club and WALL-E.  

9.  Favorite book?

My favorite book is a Technology Thriller called Daemon by Daniel Suarez.

10.  Favorite music to work out to?

It depends on the workout. For an Aerobic based WOD where I just need to move, I prefer a House Anthem with a great beat. But if I need to move some heavy weight, I need something that just instills rage and just builds up inside me.

11.  When you aren’t working or working out, where can we find you?

 I'm either at home spending time with my wife or on the playground with my niece.

12.  How has CrossFit changed you?

CrossFit has changed everything. It has really opened my eyes what fitness is and training for a purpose.  I use to randomly lift weights every now and then. Then my niece was born. She started crawling, then walking and now she is running. CrossFit allows me to keep up with her.

13.  What do you love most about CrossFit St. Clair?

The Staff and the other CrossFitters.

14.  What 3 words would people use to describe you?

Happy, funny and geeky.
