Member Spotlight: Stephen Shenal

Welcome to a fun little endeavor we've taken on to get to know your fellow CFSC members a little better...

And hey, who better to start with than the guy who is clearly using his wizarding powers to lift those weights while the rest of us #mugglestruggle

Did this get uncomfortable already?  

Hey there, Steve!  Where are you from?

I'm originally from a small town in Fayette county called McClellandtown, but now I live in Scott Township. 

What do you do for a living?

I am a pharmacist.  

How long have you been doing Crossfit?

I've been doing Crossfit since 2011.

Tell us about your athletic background...

When I was younger I play sports all year round so that meant baseball, soccer, and basketball. Soccer become my favorite of the 3 and I had played from when I was 3 all the way up to 18 when I graduated high school.

What brought you to CrossFit St. Clair?

My former gym was going through some big changes and ended up shutting down so I was an orphan until St. Clair took me in.
 

What's your favorite way to sweat?

Outside of Crossfit? Umm

Favorite food?

I'm really a big fan of this chicken harissa and chickpeas that I make or nice steak on my cast iron. If it's not home cooked I have a problem (read addiction) with sushi.
 

Favorite movie?

I don't get out to the movies a lot but I try to make it for most of the Marvel movies.
 

Favorite book?

For fiction I end up reading Ender's Game once a year. Non Fiction Robert Greene's 42 Law of Power and 33 Strategies of War.
 

What music do you like to work out to?

Techno/Trap/Trance is the way to go for working out.
 

So if you're not working or working out, where could we find you?

When I'm not working or working out you can find me around my house. Specifically my couch. If I'm not at home you can check the casino.
 

How has CrossFit impacted you?

Crossfit has taught me about patience and self discipline. When I first came in to the Crossfit world I saw everyone moving bigger weight and executing big time gymnastic movements, and that's what I wanted. Who needed the basics? Not me. But I didn't put it together that to move that heavy weight I needed to have the basics.
 

What do you enjoy most about CFSC?

Easily the best thing about St. Clair is the sense of community. Everyone knows everyone even if they don't make it to the same class times. The programming is pretty top notch as well. I have PR'd all my lifts by double digit increases since we started following the OPEX model. Recently we retested Grace, and my time went from 3:15 down to 2:30!
 

What 3 words would people use to describe you?

Is that Harry Potter?

That's four, but we'll allow for it.

Any favorite words or quotes to live by?
