Member Spotlight: Diane Zuri

Hi Everyone!  We're back with a new look and a great member spotlight to kick off 2016!  Do you know Di?  You probably do, because she's the type of chick to go up to you, introduce herself, make you feel like a part of the community, and cheer you on as you learn a new skill, struggle through a WOD, or PR a lift!  Di is a total sweetheart who makes all of us push a little harder and feel a lot better!  She is the first to organize something nice for the community (hey, coaches' holiday gifts!) and always willing to help out in any way she can.  When she isn't busy crushing heavy weights and flying over the bars, well... wait a second... let's ask her!

Hey there!  Where are you from?

Born and raised in Pittsburgh. I've travelled all over but never planted myself elsewhere. I love our city!

 

What do you do for a living?

I am a hairdresser at Alberta Modern Hair in Mt. Lebanon. I am also a writer. One of the magazines I write for is WodTalk. I love writing for them! I love getting into the minds of athletes and learning what makes them go and hearing amazing stories of perserverance while overcoming failure and obstacles.

 

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

a little over 4 years now

 

Tell us about your athletic history…

I played softball, soccer and basketball as a kid, then got into weight lifting during college. I startedhorseback riding about 10 years ago and now I own a beautiful, sweet black and white paint quarterhorse named Primo! I've always loved working out and one day, I saw a Groupon for CrossFit and I was like whaaaat??? It took me literally 6 months to use it but after the first day; I was hooked.

What brought you to CrossFit St. Clair?

My box broke up :(  Everyone sort of scattered. The former owner met with Josh as CFSC was pretty new, and talked about programming, our coaches and that our old members needed a home lol. Our programming format, OPEX, was introducedhere so that is why I came here! It's really nice to work out with your friends that you started CrossFit with, along with meeting new friends. There's a comfort zone training under coaches who know you and your immediate capabilities but it is also awesome when coaches who are new to you, spot things you didn't realize you were/were not doing or push you to do more because they simply feel that you can.

 

What are you currently working on in the gym?  

I am working on literally everything. Injury and illness set me back, so I am re-building my strength base along with gymnastics. I want a damn Muscle up!

 

Favorite food?  

Oh, I have a few. But these two, I could literally eat every day and never get bored. I love salmon and I love pizza. Not together, but on second thought...I have never tried it! Hmmm...picture a white pizza with grilled spicy salmon and spinach on top!!! Oh, I'm definitely making that.

 

Favorite movie?

The Princess Bride

 

Favorite book?

Atlas Shrugged

 

Favorite music to work out to?

Depends on my mood. I love trance thanks to Jim Crowell. We used to have Trance Fridays at our old box and I became hooked. I love tons of hip hop and rap, like Eminem, Lil Wayne, whoever. I like trap, dubstep... Yellow Claw is a new fav. If you look at my playlists, you will see a combo of rap, pop, electric, country, and Christian. Sounds strange but it works for me.

 

When you aren’t working or working out, where can we find you?

At the farm with my horse, hanging out with my nephews whom I love more than anything, and hanging out with friends. That can be pretty much anywhere from a restaurant, shopping, a good game of Cards Against Humanity or just watching movies.

 

How has CrossFit changed you?

Physically, it's changed my physique completely. Mentally, it's taught me that I am stronger than I ever gave myself credit for. Emotionally, it's taught me to simply embrace it all; all the good and bad emotions one can collect throughout a day and use them as a driving force during a workout. It's taught me to tune out the negative voice that tells me things like "Oh just stop, this is hard and you are tired and this kinda sucks so just sit down." I literally can talk myself in and out of the workoutthe entire time and it's a challenge to ignore it and keep going, but when I simply "change the channel" on my internal conversation and just zone in; I can push myself beyond what Ithought I could ever physically do.

What do you love most about CrossFit St. Clair?

Truly, it's the people. I know everyone always says that, community and family, etc. but it really is the people. I love meeting new people! I have no problem going up to someone and starting a conversation. I've been that way since I was a little kid. I'm pretty open and outgoing so I'm usually okay in a situation where I don't really know anyone. I am fascinated by the fact that this sport that we love draws people from every walk of life. There is no "type" of person who does CrossFit. Every type does! Because of this, I have met some truly amazing people; some whom I consider my closest and most cherished friends. Everyone we meet can't be BFFs and that's okay, but during those 60 minutes when everyone is working really hard...we are all on the same team. When you are done, you cheer on those still working hard to finish because they will and have done that same kindness for you. There's something about hearing your name being yelled out that pushes you through that "wall" so be a team player and call out someone else's when they need it because they will be there for you when you need it, too.
