Member Spotlight: Dean Aloise

We're back this week with another member spotlight! Most of us simply know him as the handsome dude with perfect hair at 5 in the morning...he wakes up like that. As you are about to find out, Dean is more than just a pretty face. He is an awesome guy with a big family and an even bigger heart.

Hey there!  Where are you from?

Bethel Park, PA

What do you do for a living?

I am the head of an HR consulting firm called Buck Consultants.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

About 2.5 years.

Tell us about your athletic history…

That's easy....I don't have much of one!   I was a band guy in high school.   Played the guitar in the jazz band and was the drum captain in the marching band.  It's kind of fun to think that, thanks to CrossFit, I can start to call myself an athlete for the very first time - in my late thirties!

What brought you to CrossFit St. Clair?

You guessed it .... The people!   Without a doubt, an amazingly solid crew of people to work out with.

What’s your favorite way to sweat?

It's gotta be the Assault Bike.  For some reason, it's fun to see everyone in the gym get demolished by it, and we all revel in how bad we suffered!

Favorite food?

Red Vines.   Far better than kale or a protein shake.

Favorite movie?

Toss up between Rocky III and Rocky IV.

Favorite book?

Raising four kids, I've read hundreds of children's books for bedtime...the one that tops them all:  "Everybody Poops".

Favorite music to work out to?

I've kind of been enjoying the 80s hair metal stuff on rotation lately...Poison, Whitesnake...brings me back to my early days of learning to shred on the guitar!   But you can only take so much cheesy music; so, Rage Against the Machine also works.

When you aren’t working or working out, where can we find you?

I've got a beautiful wife, Angela, and four wonderful kids, Ty (10), Wes (8), Drew (6), and Eva (3).   I'm usually doing my best to spend time with them one way or another.

How has CrossFit changed you?

At 37, I'm in far better shape than I was in my early 20s, which is great.  It's also given me a way to show my kids that staying fit and healthy can be really fun, which I'm sure will pay dividend for them in the future.

What do you love most about CrossFit St. Clair?

Of course the people are #1.  But I also really like the programming - the OPEX stuff seems to have more science behind it than your typical box's programming.   The coaches are great, Josh runs the place like a friendly family business, and I love that it's OK to use as much chalk as you want - even if it gets on the floor.

Any mantra, favorite quote, or words to live by?

“Do more than belong: participate. Do more than care: help. Do more than believe: practice. Do more than be fair: be kind. Do more than forgive: forget. Do more than dream: work.”

- William Arthur Ward
