Member Spotlight: Wade Roth

Hey Everyone it's Friday!!! And it's time to shine a bright light on an awesome guy. He's a soft spoken man with a razor sharp wit. He always asks the right questions about programming, which gets Abby excited so she can completely nerd out in explanation of her madness. You can probably catch him in the back corner doing his own warm up with TRX bands or scaling the side of a cliff. His name is Wade Roth and he has been an absolute joy to have in the gym. Before you run outside to get a sunburn tonight, take a second and get to know a little bit about my boy Wade.

1.  Hey there!  Where are you from?

 

 

Since high school I’ve been in the South Hills except for a couple of years when I lived in Chicago. Before that we moved around quite a bit. We spent most of our time in Sharon PA, Austintown OH and Erie PA. I lived in Lancaster PA during the summer of 1979 which was right after the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant meltdown scare. That was pretty interesting.

 

 

 

2.  What do you do for a living?

 

I do commercial software development for FTI Technology. Basically, our software helps customers go through millions of e-mails and other documents to find the ones that are relevant for the particular matter at hand. That could be an internal investigation, government investigation (IRS, SEC, DOJ, etc.), product liability lawsuit (e.g., drug company being sued), among others.

3.  How long have you been doing CrossFit?

 

It’s been a little over a year and a half.

 

4.  Tell us about your athletic history…

 

There is not much to say about it. I tried several sports in high school and I sucked at all of them.

 

5.  What brought you to CrossFit St. Clair?

 

The box I originally joined went through some ownership changes and I didn’t feel the direction they were going in was conducive for my growth as an athlete (and I use that term loosely). Several others visited CrossFit St. Clair so I thought I would give it a try too.

 

6.  What’s your favorite way to sweat? 

 

I love rock climbing. I haven’t done it much since our daughter was born. It beat me up physically and now after several years of concerted effort I’m finally feeling like I’m getting back to normal, well, normal for me at least.

As far as CrossFit goes, there’s nothing like a 20+ minute chipper. I also like hero workouts (the ones that don’t have heavy barbells).

 

7.  Favorite food?  

 

I’m more of an “eat to live” person so I keep things pretty simple. PB&J is definitely in the top part of the list. If I have to pick something, it would have to be a breakfast food. Right now, I’m thinking Eggs Benedict.

 

8.  Favorite movie?

 

I love comedies. I have a soft spot for movies that are filmed in Pittsburgh too… as long as they make the city look as awesome as it truly is. I don’t think I could pick an absolute favorite though… Stripes, Caddyshack, Wedding Crashers, Happy Gilmore, There’s Something About Mary, A Fish Called Wanda, Fletch… the list could go on and on.

 

9.  Favorite book?

 

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer is probably my favorite book. Being pretty sentimental, I’m still very fond of The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. It was the first novel that I read.

 

10.  Favorite music to work out to?

 

Heavy rock for sure. Adam just edged out Phil for the best playlist. Judas Priest’s Breaking the Law put him over the top.

 

When I run races I have a pretty eclectic mix of rock and pop. I don’t love all the songs on that particular playlist but they all have some sort of meaning. Some songs remind me of Jackie or Julie, another family member or a good friend, maybe a movie or I just like some of them.

 

11.  When you aren’t working or working out, where can we find you?

 

 

I’m at home with my family trying to figure out what to do with the http://pittsburghisawesome.org domain name that I registered a little while ago. I take photographs too. I’m much better on that side of the camera. Oh yeah, and now that Spring has sprung, I guess I could be mowing the lawn.

 

12.  How has CrossFit changed you?

 

I’m certainly in the best physical shape of my life. I’m not a gifted athlete (again, I use that term loosely when referring to myself) but I’m intrigued by how far I can push myself.

 

13.  What do you love most about CrossFit St. Clair?

 

The community. A bunch of us crashed your party and the community took us in. Everyone was incredibly nice and supportive. Except for Andy when he told me that my cleans sucked and I should just do them like “him.” I he pointed to Mike Whitehead who was busting out a strong set and didn’t tell me that he’s was one of the best Oly guys at CFSC. I could only stand there and think, “yeah, right… just like that.” J

 

I love that we have several coaches. Having different perspectives has helped me a lot since I’ve joined.

 

14.  What 3 words would people use to describe you?

 

Introverted, genuine and focused.
