Member Spotlight: Bill Best

Happy Friday Ladies and Gentlemen. We are back with another Member Spotlight and this one focuses on a guy you probably don't know a whole lot about. He is a proud veteran, loving husband, gun enthusiast, and cat lover? He keeps to himself and is known to toss a good bit of weight around and no we are not talking about Cole Trickle. This week we take a look at Billy Best and find out exactly what makes him tick and what he likes to do besides bench press houses.

1.  Hey there!  Where are you from?

West Mifflin, PA

2.  What do you do for a living?

I work for the Allegheny County Medical Examiner Forensic Lab (The Crime Lab).  There I am a Firearms and Toolmarks examiner.  Im also part of the Crime Scene Investigations unit of the lab.  Basically I match casings and bullets back to guns and also go to crime scenes and process the scene.  CSI Pittsburgh.

3.  How long have you been doing CrossFit?

About 3 years now

4.  Tell us about your athletic history…

In my youth I played soccer and also did competitive downhill ski racing.  In high school I played football (RB, DB) and was a sprinter on the track team (100m, 200m, 4x100m, and 4x400m).  I continued to stay active throughout college with traditional weightlifting.

5.  What brought you to CrossFit St. Clair?

CrossFit St. Clair is the 3rd box I have been a member of.  The previous 2 both underwent a change in ownership/management/coaching that I did not feel was in my best interest as an athlete.  I was familiar with many of the faces of St. Clair so it was an easy transition.

6.  What’s your favorite way to sweat?

Crossfit duh.  Im a fan of a heavy fast paced sprint type workout.  Diane is one of my favorite benchmark wods.

7.  Favorite food?

Triangles covered with cheese aka pizza.  Worked at a pizza store all through high school and college.

8.  Favorite movie?

Ill have to throw a few out there.  Days of Thunder, Batman The Dark Night Rises, and Stand by Me

9.  Favorite book?

Do sports, guns, and car magazines count?

10.  Favorite music to work out to?

Have to go with some hard rock like Seether, Three Days Grace, Linkin Park or some dirty rap like Eminem, Lil Wayne, and Jeezey.

11.  When you aren’t working or working out, where can we find you?

I spend a good bit of time at home with my loving wife Emily and cat Kimber.  I also like to spend time in the woods hunting, at the gun range throwing some lead down range and at the car race tracks.

12.  How has CrossFit changed you?

Prior to CrossFit my idea of fitness was to get as big and as strong as possible.  I didn't watch what I ate or slept like I should.  My first CrossFit workout, Murph, really opened my eyes as to how out of shape I really was.  To start, I have shed about 20 pounds since starting CrossFit.  My diet and sleep patterns are also vastly improved.  I also pay attention to mobility and listening to what my body is telling me.  I also feel like it has improved my planning skills.  Many wods have the best results when you go in with a plan.  I think that transitions well into life.  You are presented with a task and coming up with a good plan helps complete that task.  I have also met so many great people through CrossFit and am proud to call them my friends.  This past year has been a rough one starting with the passing of my father.  My family and CrossFit family have been key in getting though these rough times.

13.  What do you love most about CrossFit St. Clair?

I love the flexibility that St. Clair offers.  Many boxes I have been too are pretty strict and don't have many options.  The coaches and facility are very accommodating to the needs and goals of all of the members.

14.  What 3 words would people use to describe you?

Dependable, Dedicated, Protective

15.  Any mantra, favorite quote, or words to live by?

Make the most of every day.  Don't look back and wish you would have done things differently.  Speak your mind.
